Research + Engagement
Collaboration between academic researchers and local communities was a foundational value of Urban Planning and Policy at UIC over 40 years ago. This approach to research and engagement is visible in the affiliation many UPP faculty have with CUPPA’s research centers and institutes. It is enhanced by the presence within the department of the Urban Data Visualization Lab within UPP, with a mission to support our teaching, research, and service missions. A commitment to engagement also informs UPP’s approach to teaching, from undergraduate General Education courses to the capstone in the BA in Urban and Public Affairs, to the first year studio and advanced studios in specializations in the MUPP program.
The research centers and institutes housed within the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs offer faculty support for sponsored research projects. The centers also provide opportunities for students to work as research assistants.
Faculty research interests are detailed on individual faculty profile pages. Review a list of recent publications by faculty. Faculty are also engaged in a large number of service activities ranging from involvement with academic journals, to service on boards and advisory committees, to providing specialized consultation or commentary on matters of public interest.

UPP students have earned a strong reputation as interns in organizations and agencies in the public, private, and non-profit sector in Chicago and beyond. The department has a number of ways to facilitate finding an intern who can assist your organization.
